A well-crafted work of sci-fi with a hearty spoonful of humor, a healthy dose of satire, and an hilarious number of beverages and treats listed, Necessity is the Mother of Invention is well worth a read. It pokes fun at the wild overreaching of helicopter parents, the challenges of parent-child interactions when the child is newly departed for college, and the complications of technology. It reminds us that relationships are not simple and no technology is without consequences. The story is an entertaining fiction that is just realistic enough to make the reader uneasy with the implications.

I provided feedback on this story as my mother (thankfully not a helicopter parent) was first writing it, and now that it is published I’m pleased to also provide my narration. This was a lot of fun to do, so thanks to Mary DeVries for writing. Hope you enjoy the audio version!
